Wolf Alice‘s Ellie Rowsell has revealed how young female fans are increasingly telling her how the band has inspired them to pick up the guitar.
The frontwoman of the Mercury Prize winning Camden band says that a shift in attitudes is leading to more female guitarists, weeks after it was revealed that young women make up 50 percent of new guitar players.
“I have noticed lots more girls are coming up to me and saying, ‘Hey, I started the guitar!’” Rowsell told The Times.
When asked the reason for the cultural change, Rowsell said: “Well, I never had that attitude of ‘I’m going to do this because it looks like I can’t’, which is happening much more among young girls at the moment. It’s to do with #MeToo. People are considering all the things they never considered before.”
Last month, a study revealed that females now account for 50% of the market for beginner guitar players in the UK and US. The figures were suggested earlier this year, but it was said that most of the guitar purchases by females were made online as they felt “intimated” in “bricks and mortar” guitar shop”.
