Music fans are divided over Slaves’ comments on stage times and support bands

Where do you stand?

Slaves have caused a debate online after declaring that their fans ought to show up when the doors open at their gigs to ensure that they see the support band.

The punk duo took to Twitter to respond to requests that asked them to share the stage times for their current tour, before they revealed why they refused.

“We don’t post set times to our shows,” wrote the band. “We were the support once. We wouldn’t be here if nobody turned up to watch us. So turn up when your ticket says and you’ll be fine.”

However, their comments have caused a divide among music fans – with many agreeing that everyone ought to get down early to discover support bands, while others argued that they didn’t have the luxury to do so.

“Or…you could realise that some people have work/commitments they can’t get out of and ask the band they like what time they’re playing so they don’t miss it/ask to get off work early not all of us are kids with no jobs or obligations,” wrote one of their followers. “And not everyone lives within 10 minutes of the venue. If I’m gonna drive/take public transport [for] 1-2 hours for a show, I don’t want to miss the band I want to see. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to see the openers or the other bands on the tour.”

DrownedInSound’s Derek Robertson wrote: “As someone who has spent untold hours waiting around in venues (and vast sums of [money] on shit beer while waiting) I can honestly say this is bullshit.”

Others agreed: “In the real world some people have ‘jobs’ and want to ‘not waste money’ on a gig they don’t know if they can make it for their act anyway. Comments like these are nice in principle but only really resonate if you’re a student.”

In response, another replied: “Then show up early. You aren’t going to miss the headline if you are there for 8pm and you might just see your new favourite band.”

“Yes to this. I wouldn’t have discovered Slaves if I’d known Biffy weren’t on ’til after 11pm at their 2014 Troxy gig. Though that’s not because I wouldn’t have gone for the support – It was the day after our engagement drinks & I was so rough I’d have skipped the gig altogether.”

Another fan added: “I don’t understand why people don’t watch the support acts, there are so many amazing bands to discover!”
