The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin is considering a sequel

“A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends”

Aaron Sorkin, the writer of The Social Network, is considering a sequel to the 2010 film.

Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for director David Fincher’s Oscar-winning movie following the story behind the creation of Facebook, says he believes there’s enough material to write a follow up.

The original movie starred Jesse Eisenberg as Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg as he began work on the social network which would later make him a billionaire after it launched to global success.

Speaking to AP Entertainment, Sorkin said: “First of all, I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018. But I know enough to know that there should be a sequel. A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss Twins and Eduardo Saverin.”

Facebook has endured more than one controversy in the years since the film’s release, with the Russian hacking claims over the 2016 US elections and claims that the site’s ‘pivot to video’ trend led to companies to cutting hundreds of jobs.

The writer went on to explain that the film’s producer, Scott Rudin, has also been in touch with ideas about a sequel.

Sorkin said: “I’ve gotten more than one email from him with an article attached saying, ‘Isn’t it time for a sequel?’”

The original – which also starred Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake – was released in 2010 to critical success and went on to gain eight Oscar nominations. It won the gong for three categories, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and Best Film Editing for Angus Wall and Krik Baxter.

However, Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, criticised the biopic when it was first released, calling the project “hurtful.”
