New Suicide Squad movie has a title, release date and James Gunn is on board to direct

New film could include a new set of villains

The title for the new Suicide Squad movie has been confirmed and James Gunn is in talks to direct the project.

The film is currently titled The Suicide Squad, and under Gunn’s guidance, is being described as a “relaunch” as opposed to a “sequel”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It is slated for release on August 6, 2021.

Gunn was previously announced as being attached to the project back in October 2018, the first since the former Guardians of the Galaxy director was fired by Disney after a series of controversial tweets allegedly written in the past by Gunn, surfaced online.

It is thought the new film could still be set in the same Suicide Squad universe, but will leave the door open for a different set of villains.

Gunn is reportedly planning to take the franchise in a new direction with a new cast of characters and actors.

It’s unclear what that means for the stars of David Ayer’s 2016 original — including Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), and Will Smith (Deadshot).

Robbie is due to appear as Quinn in the Suicide Squad spin off Birds Of Prey.

Suicide Squad received poor reviews but was a big hit at the box office, taking in $750 million worldwide.

Reviewing the film, NME wrote: “But really, Suicide Squad pretends to be nothing more than a fun, fast, daft, superhero movie, and it absolutely delivers. It’s much like those old comic pages…great to look at, but if you get a bit too close you can see the gaps between the dots.”
