‘The Umbrella Academy’ star teases “completely insane” season 2

"He could either go completely insane off of it or he might just be a kid."

The Umbrella Academy star David Castañeda has suggested that things could take a dark turn with his character Diego if the Netflix show returns for a second season.

The show, adapted from from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s hugely popular comic book series, is awaiting the green light to return from Netflix – although reports suggest that it’s a near certainty.

“One of the best things about the show is how the characters arc, and it takes time to see people grow out of the traumas that they have,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’d like to see where Diego goes. He’s able to cope with a lot more things, but now he lost his mom, he lost Patch. He could either go completely insane off of it or he might just be a kid.”

Number Two in the Umbrella Academy

This comes after Castañeda previously explained why his character is so different to his depiction in Gerard Way’s source material. In the comic books, Diego is also known as The Kraken – a character who is able to hold his breath underwater.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Castañeda explained that the change was prompted by showrunner Steve Blackman’s desire to keep the show rooted in reality.

“[Showrunner Steve Blackman] wanted to ground the comic book even more,” he said. “So for example, Klaus doesn’t levitate in the show, whereas in the comic book he does.

“And there’s something about seeing someone who has actually no real supernatural powers and only being able to throw things with precision that kind of makes people be like, ‘Oh, I can see that, I can put that person in real life and I can see it play out as a human being’.”

Meanwhile, NME celebrated the debut of the Umbrella Academy earlier last month with a special one off issue to mark the show’s debut. It features an exclusive interview with Gerard Way and you can find out all the details here.
